Why is the Hertzsprung - Russell diagram important to the astronomy?

The HR diagram is an important tool to astronomers. It groups stars according to Luminosity, Spectral Class, color, temperature, and absolute magnitude. It can be used to determine a Stars lifetime, its different stages. That's why is so important to the astronomy this diagram.

What are the two qualities of a star does the HR diagram measure, and how many days the diagram do this?

The HR diagram plot each star on a graph measuring the star's absolute magnitude or brightness against its temperature and color and it takes some weeks.

Where on the diagram would our sun be found?

Our own star, the Sun, is nearly in the middle of both the temperature and luminosity scales relative to other stars. This puts it around the middle of the diagonal line.
